African-American Civil Rights Movement
The African-American Civil Rights Movement mainly happened during 1954 to 1964.
From 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court indicates that segregated rules in public schools violate the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. This is the first major victory of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. 1955, Rosa Parks’ refusing to give her seat to a white passenger had lead to the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-1956. At the end of 1956, the Montgomery bus boycott had successfully integrated Montgomery’s buses. 1960, the marks of sit-in started at Greensboro, N.C. When the four African American college students sat down at a whites-only lunch counter and ordered coffee. Even though being denied service, they still sat silently and politely until closing time. 1961, freedom riders rode interstate buses into the segregated southern U.S.A. to challenge the local laws. 1963, during a civil-rights protest, the police used water hoses and dogs to against all the protesters, which are mostly children. This event had increased pressure on President John F. Kennedy to act. On August 28, 250,000 people participated the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech. This march and all the other conditions did put more pressures on President John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. After President John F. Kennedy was killed, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. 1964, when Martin Luther King Jr. was 35, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. started the Poor People’s March and was killed when he was supporting workers to participate the strike call.
